Sgt. Tanner Higgins came home today, his fifth tour of duty cut short. A line of motorcycles two miles in length preceded the hearse. Before them were dozens of fire trucks from towns I knew of and some I didn’t. State troopers and local law enforcement led the procession which began in Greenville and ended in Winnsboro after passing through Sulphur Springs and Yantis. Flags and ribbons and people lined the path and as Sgt Higgins passed the old men placed their Korean or Vietnam Veteran hats over their hearts, police officers stood at attention and saluted, appropriate Bible verses lettered on long banners waved in the breeze, and tears were wiped from cheeks.
Waiting for Sgt. Higgins to pass, I thought of lyrics from a song by Krista Branch “ We live our lives from day to day without a thought of the price they pay”. I didn’t know of Sgt Higgins prior to hearing on the local radio stations that he had been killed in action. Having stood on that corner witnessing the welcome home offered by the East Texas communities as they honored their fallen son it will be very difficult to live my daily life without a thought of the price he paid.
