It’s Just the Constitution, Who Cares

You certainly have been hearing about states wanting to collect sales taxes for online sales.  Before now in states like Texas if you bought an item online from a seller that had retail outlets in Texas then the seller had to collect the Texas sales tax.  However if the seller was in say Iowa and did not have a retail outlet in Texas then the sales tax did not have to be collected.  Several Republican Senators are now developing legislation that would allow sales taxes to be collected for online sales regardless of where the seller or buyer live.

I happened to notice that Article I Section 9 of the US constitution has a clause that says “No tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State”.  I can’t find the confusion in that short clause that would allow Texas to place a tax on an article exported from Iowa.

Oh well, it’s just the constitution, who cares.
